They are members of Plantation Country Club and helping to bring pickleball to that club and are now a local distributor of PB equipment. They are also full time residents of the Boise area and will be joining our group during the winter for indoor play. They were given a big welcome by our group.

Nick told the group that he and Tami were now Western Idaho Ambassadors and not be considered for officers of the club. They are presently working with Jan Johnson, who has stated his intention to become an ambassador at-large for this area.

In addition, Rodell should not be nominated for an officer position as he is a potential future ambassador at this time.

Nick asked if everyone had read the by-laws he had sent out by email; most of the attendees had read them. He then asked for any suggested changes, none were forthcoming. Nick stated he would send the by-laws out to the group by email for their approval.

Annual Dues: It was determined annual dues would be $12.00 for an individual and $20.00 per couple.

Dennis Forbes’ lessons: The fee for the lessons would be $10.00 per person per season beginning next season.

The executive board was initially set to include two (2) at large; it was changed to zero at large.
A discussion on names for the new “club” ensued. Dennis Forbes gave his main reason for using “Boise” in the name; People from other areas looking for pickleball in Idaho know “Boise”, not Treasure Valley.

The following three names were chosen and will be sent out to the group
for voting to determine which one would be the final name of our new entity.
All ballots must be returned to Nick Leach no later than September 12, 2011.
1. Boise Metro Pickleball Club
2.	Greater Boise Pickleball Club
3.	Pickleball Club of Boise

Rodell said he had a meeting on September 13th, 2011 with the Meridian Parks and Recreation to talk about Pickleball in Meridian. They have allotted him thirty (30) minutes for his presentation.

Nick stated that the Boise P&R were resurfacing four tennis courts at the Fairmont Park on Northview and that this may, in the future, be an opportunity for more PB courts in one location.

Nominated Officers:
The following persons were nominated for officer positions:

President: Jim Crotty, Perry Whittaker
Vice President: John Sweeney, Jack Bonawitz
Secretary: Rhonda Reed
Treasurer: Reesa Brown

The names will be sent out via email to the group for voting. All ballots must be returned via email to Nick Leach no later than September 12, 2011. All nominated individual may withdraw their names from the nominations.

Fiscal Year of Club:
It was determined the annual dues of $12.00 per individual and $20.00 per couple
would be for the time period of October 1 through September 30. This twelve
month span would be the club’s fiscal year.

Liability Insurance: Dennis Forbes stated that for him to teach there needed to be liability insurance at least for six months of the year.

Website: Dennis Forbes reminded everyone that Jan Johnson has set up an Idaho Pickleball website on the USAPA Website. In addition, Nick stated that we would be working with volunteers (to be determined) so that we could also have a website separate from USAPA, one that would be attainable through a Google or like browser search, not having to go through USAPA website to reach it.

A discussion was held on the ambassadorships of Boise and Meridian. Dennis, Gary and Rodell are working on getting the existing ambassadorships vacated so that new persons may be appointed to the positions.

John Sweeney brought up Meridian youth courts and the new Meridian Senior Center; Rodell said he would find out about both items.

A historian and photographer are still needed for the club.

John Sweeney brought up the Borah Park pickleball courts. It was pointed out that the pickleball courts there are not a definite go at this time.

Dennis Forbes talked about a youth program he wants to have happen next summer. He also told us about his recent teaching of Special Needs Kids, a moving story for all of us.

Homecourt Y for the winter: Nick said there were now two painted courts there, but a problem with the tape is keeping us from having two additional taped courts. We are looking for ideas for borders for our courts, using the portable nets that are not tape.

The next meeting has not been scheduled but will be held sometime between September 15th and September 30th. It will be held at the same place and same time. Reminder notices will be sent out prior to the meeting.

Minutes respectfully submitted by Reesa J. Brow

MEETING FOR CLUB

NICK LEACH WROTE:
My fellow pickleballers,

Well we had our “first” official pre-club organizational meeting and we think it went great. We had around seventeen pickleballers attend, with all the pizza, salad, and cool drinks you wanted. We nominated executive board members, came up with three proposed club names, with one late entry, and some revisions to the by-laws. Reesa Brown was kind enough to take minutes and we think everyone’s voice was heard. I have attached the minutes of the meeting along with the first by-law revision (with the revisions in red). In addition we discussed some current events, such as Rodell Hill’s pending meeting with the Meridian P&R, the fact that Boise P&R are resurfacing four tennis courts at Fairmont Park on Northview, and that we now have a pickleball equipment supplier in our area. The new “distributors” are Chris Dillon and her sister Kathy Zielinski and they can be reached at 208-639-1663 so give them a call if you’re looking for a paddle, balls, etc. Now to the main point of this email, VOTING. Listed below are the board nominees, the name choices, and whether you approve of the revised by-laws so here goes:

President:

Jim Crotty

Perry Whittaker

Vice President:

John Sweeting (he also expressed an interest in running for the President position so you choose)

Jack Bonawitz

Secretary:

Rhonda Reed

Treasure:

Reesa Brown

Names:

Boise Metro Pickleball Club – B.M.P.C

Greater Boise Pickleball Club – G.B.P.C

Pickleball Club of Boise – P.C.B

Boise Area Pickleball Association – B.A.P.A

PLANTATION STATION! NEW KIDS IN TOWN!

Good golly miss Molly,
I thought I was in snow bird country! There were maybe 35 or more picklers at the Plantation Country Club courts last Monday evening. I can’t believe it! And it was almost 98 degrees out! What is the matter with these folks? What? Are they losing their minds? Does this man Dennis Forbes have a hypnotic hold on them? Here he is, perspiration beads on his forehead, patiently instructing, correcting, cajoling, and even whistling to get the players attention so he can show them how to do the skill thing. And their loving it! Smiles, grins, chuckles and even an expletive every now and then! Gosh, think I’ll join them! Welcome to the game you who reside at the Plantation. I heard the enthusiast who started all this action is Tony Binder, the country club pro. I think he deserves the enthusiastic shout out for his efforts! Dennis Forbes told me that 28 of those enthusiastic newbies signed that they were interested in our pickle club when it is fully organized. Wow! Think of the fun we are going to have playing with all these different players!

PICKLEBALL CLUB!

Nick Leach writes:

Fellow Pickleballers,

For those of you who will not be able to attend Wednesday’s meeting please feel free to nominate people for the executive board (President, Vice President, Treasure, Secretary, and two board members at-large) via emails to me and I’ll be sure and put them on the list. My concern is that there are a lot of people (that we want to have there) who are still on vacation and cannot make it.

I would like a poll done on who will plan to be at this meeting.(commitments). With that
> in mind I have looked into using an area inside the Idaho Pizza
> place (on Fairview in Meridian)for the meeting. They are pretty
> much open as far as days go so it’s up to us. The next two Wednesda
> y evenings (Aug 24 & Aug 31) are available. Other things to keep in mind for the meeting are the
> election of the executive board members and a club name. There are
> many other issues we need to address and we will address them all i
> n due time. NEW KIDS IN TOWN!

The word around town is there is a new gang of kids at the Plantation Country Club! Whew! We heard that fifty of those kids showed up for a clinic given by none other than our own Dennis and Linda Forbes, aided by Rodell Hill, Tim Gleason, and Gary Robbins, who have volunteered to teach them the game. This is how it is supposed to work folks! Supporting and encouraging newbies. I talked to a couple of Ladies at the tournament who were from the Plantation. Christine Dillon and her sister Kathy Zielinski were so interested in the play and equipment, they reeked of enthusiasm Christine called me today and is very enthused about pickleball. She and her sister Kathy are going to promote the game, starting at the plantation, by providing equipment and specialty items related to the game. She was gracious to invite me to play next Monday night at 7:00 pm. Her enthusiasm is contagious, I cannot wait to go see all those players! Keep tuned, I am sure we will be hearing more from these dynamic sisters!

GUESS WHO CAME TO VOLUNTEER?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XV30H5QtRDY/TksJg4niZ2I/AAAAAAAACVI/TepO5Ex4XKE/s320/2011%2B032.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641613418770360162" />
There are many times one thinks of those who volunteer and wonder what motivates them. We know that many are motivated by love of a game, or recognition, maybe just wanting to be part of something or just enjoy helping. At the Idaho senior games played here in Boise, we had many volunteers and helpers. None sticks out in my mind more than a young man named Kelton Judy. Kelton came to town with his grandfather Steve Judy. Kelton moved onto the courts with the aplomb of one who has been there many times. He shagged balls all day for both days, even down to the 95 degree afternoons. Rodell Hill came up to me and suggested he should have a gold medal for his help. And that is just what happened. We awarded Kelton the gold for his efforts beyond the call of duty. Now Kelton showed very little emotion during the presentation, but to a grandfather’s eye, the pride of recognized accomplishment started to show. We didn’t see much of our tired volunteer after that, but his grandfather related that he was very proud of his medal, showing it to his cousins in eastern Idaho, and could hardly wait to show it to his siblings at home. How about a “shout out” to Kelton Judy, a volunteer of volunteers!

NEW USAPA AMBASSADORS!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-r-7XWw89e08/TkrcNanRZ8I/AAAAAAAACVA/q4nMk2MWh4I/s320/2011%2B037.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641563606275418050" />
Of course, how about a big shout out for our newest USAPA ambassadors, NICK AND TAMI LEACH! Our tournament is over and went off without too many hitches. I have heard many positive remarks about the tourney and heard ( by way of Rodell) only one negative. We had a great time, but found the 12:00 to 2:00pm just a weeeeeeee bit warm. If we hadn’t the slight breeze, it would have really been hot. If we work with the Idaho Senior Games next year, perhaps an earlier time of year would not be as bad as August has been these last four years. We were down in attendance (39 entrants), about half the number last year. It was not just pickleball that was down as I was told, but all events were in that situation. Except for a keystroke omission on my computer, the women’s doubles was the only bracket that was screwed up and cost us a lot of twisting and turning to get players in their proper places. The score keepers did a great job on Saturday, but on Sunday we were caught short. A volunteer from the senior games stepped in and with the help of Sandi Johnson (no relation) of Nampa, they provided a fairly smooth run scheduling. For all of you who helped, my heartfelt gratitude. It simply points out that one or two people cannot do it all. Thanks again. If I tried to honor you all by name, I fear I would leave someone out. Don’t want hurt feelings and besides my fingers are tired of typing. Great Job ! I have been seeking liability insurance through USAPA, and am waiting for replies. If anyone knows of group liability insurance that we can tap into, please let me know. I have talked with the Nampa Park and Recreation and they seem to think something can be worked out here to allow the clinic. We are meeting next week and I will submit the findings them. The indications are that they will allow the clinics on Nampa courts, but liability is still an issue. As you may be aware, the service provided by Dennis and Linda Forbes is very important to our growth and is particularly important to me.
Let's put our collective heads together and find solutions. We all know that this game is a social, enjoyable game played for the sole purpose of having fun. We do that very well. Now we are falling into the trap of personalities and conflicts ruining all of the work that has been done to promote our fun in Idaho. We should say "shame on us". Perhaps we should return to the early days when we first started to play together. No dissension there! It is a good thing to forgive and forget. Lets all try to do just that! Sooo, see you on the courts. The time will be around 8:30 before the clinic begins. The time was suggested by Dennis Forbes. We will keep it short, setting up times for the training of referees, bracket operations, scheduling and coordinators with the YMCA, and all other jobs. The money for our USAPA sanctioning has been sent in and our sanction will take effect when the money reaches USAPA. One of the areas that has been over looked in the past is having either the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts contacted to shag balls. This could lead to their community service merit badges and would be a great service to us. Now is the time for our enthusiasm to heighten as we prepare for what could be the best ever pickleball tournament in Idaho. It shows combined brackets. I want to thank everyone for coming and also for all the help. I think we had more volunteers to score keep than ever and it really made it go well. I hope you all had a good time. As I am writing this it is suppose to be 90 degrees today. Going out on the boat for sure. Have a good summer. Thanks Steve&Sue

Clinic Results

If you think the clinic put on by Dennis and Linda Forbes is too much trouble and not very productive, You should have been with us at the Lewiston, ID. tournament. Five local players were there and they garnered three gold medals and two bronze. I was privileged to referee the gold match that the team of Rodell Hill and Gary Robbins won to win the gold. I might as well have been at the Forbes clinic watching them play. They utilized most all of the strategies and movements taught by Dennis. For the most part, they dominated a match against some very good players. It was a pleasure to watch. Those same strategies were used (sometimes not very well)in the mixed doubles matches that Jan Johnson and his partner Pat Stnard used to win the gold medal. Same for the bronze in the men's doubles. It is an amazing thing to see what the drop shot from the serving line can do. In any event, it would prove to you that the teachings of the Forbe's team were very valid indeed.

Our own Linda Mitchell, a newbie player this year, not only played well, but took the bronze in the women's doubles. Great job Linda! She should be an inspiration for the rest of us to enter into tournaments and enjoy the fruits of our clinc. Again, great job done by Boise players.

Clinic Results

North Idaho Senior Games

NORTH IDAHO SENIOR GAMES
Lewiston, 2011
Where were you? We anticipated your competing in the North Idaho Senior games. What fun you missed; good sportsmanship, quality competition, friends who enjoy this game called pickleball.
You missed a great tournament sponsored by Lewiston and directed by Steve and Susie Judy from Clarkston WA. which is just across the Clearwater river from Lewiston. They were ably assisted by Pat Porter of Kennewick WA., and from Local Ambassadors Doug and Shirlene McMillen.
Not only was the tournament well directed, the games were enthusiastically played, with players from various points of Idaho, Washington, Oregon and even a couple of brothers from the state of California.
After the first round was completed on Friday, we were all invited to a potluck Barbeque at the home of Doug and Shirlene McMillen. Their home sets on the high banks overlooking the Clearwater river. What a view! Of course, the burgers were cooked to perfection by Frank Street of the Spokane Slammers.
If you are not interested in Pickleball (heaven forbid!), you would still enjoy the springtime in Lewiston! Plan on being there next year about this same time; you will enjoy!
